Copying has been central to my artistic practice for a long time. Whether I am reproducing photographic images in detailed pencil drawings, using photocopies as the primary material for paintings, or working digitally with photographic reproductions of abstract drawings, I treat the act of copying as a primary step towards understanding. After all, if I can reproduce something, it means that I have understood at least some of it. The series of works in this exhibition deal with this phenomenon in a different way. Painted on newsprint designed to reproduce daily news, improvised signs, gestures and traces of black pigment are reproduced with a paint roller and glue, creating patterns and graphic rhythms that resemble the structure of text in horizontal lines. Like enlarged pages in a book, the paintings may look very similar (almost like copies), but on closer inspection they turn out to be quite different. When hung at equal distances, as a sequence in a room, they structure the space and themselves become a pattern made up of copies – a rhythm.
